History
The practice has continued to grow and there are now eight partners (7 whole time equivalents) and the list size is 12,000. We have been a training practice since 1974 and are an undergraduate teaching practice taking students from Birmingham University, University College, London and The Free University, Amsterdam. We have been computerised since 1990 and joined the fundholding scheme in the third wave. The practice is a member of the Medical Research Council General Practice Research Framework.
We believe we are a happy, successful and innovative practice with a great deal to offer our patients, staff and partners. We aim to practise a high standard of medicine and to provide a comprehensive range of services on site. We have an excellent staff to whom we can delegate a wide range of administrative procedures making the practice more efficient and enabling the partners to concentrate on clinical matters. The partners regard the staff as their greatest asset and their sense of value has led to a stable team with a very low turnover. The employed staff include a Practice General Manager, an Assistant Practice Manager, 10 Reception and Secretarial staff, 4 Administrative staff, 4 nurses, 3 cleaners and a gardener. We have attached district nurses and health visitors, a midwife, a nurse advisor to the elderly, community psychiatric nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, a dietitian and a Relate counsellor.
The premises has recently been transformed by major building works to provide additional consulting rooms on the ground floor, modern reception and waiting room facilities.
Demographics
Local Population Growth
Population of Wyre Forest is 96,500. There is an expected growth of 6% from now until 2011.
Special features/characteristics of the practice
The practice covers Oldington and Foley Park ward, which is the fourth most, deprived ward in Worcestershire with a Jarman's score of +25.37. These patients have a higher standard mortality rate than other areas and their consequential health and social needs are greater. Combined with this, locally is a higher than average drug addiction problem which has been identified by both police, social services and the local council. This is one of the priority areas for the Primary Care Group over the next two years and again will have implications with regards workloads for the practice. There is currently a healthy living centre bid in progress, which is due to concentrate on the above ward. It is currently unclear exactly what primary care input would be needed into this but again this is another area, which could have a major affect on practice workload.
Nursing homes attended by the practice
We have patients at all of the eight local nursing homes within Wyre Forest, which we allocate to individual partners for continuity of care etc.
Local community hospital beds staffed by practice
There is a plan locally for 25 GP beds to come on line, again linked to the strategic review within county. We are keen to be involved with both the in-hour and out-of-hour care of patients within Wyre Forest and would envisage that this will take 1-2 sessions per week of doctor time.
Patient Demographics
Wyre Forest has a high level of patients with learning difficulties because of the sub-regional centre, which is located at Lea Castle. The practice covers three residential homes which house community based patients with learning difficulties. This again has an implication for higher than normal workload.
As already stated, our practice has a higher number than average of drug abusers and we are currently collating information on the actual numbers on our practice list. As previously mentioned this is a priority area for both the practice and the Primary Care Group over the next two years.
Car ownership: Wyre Forest 83%
SMR of local population: The average for Kidderminster West is 106 but within that we have the highest
SMR of 127 for circulatory deaths under 65.
Birth Rates: There is a high teenage conception rate in Oldington and Foley Park, otherwise the practice is similar to the county as a whole.
Public Health Information
[Taken from the Annual Report of the Director of Public Health 1999 & 2000]
Demography and Deprivation
Mid-1997 population estimate is 96,500, about 18% of Worcestershire's population. It has a slightly higher proportion of 25 to 34 and 50 to 54 year olds, and the percentage aged between 35 and 44 is a little below average for the county. The population is expected to grow by 6% during the period between 1997 and 2011, more slowly than for the whole county. There are 14 GP practices, 64 GPs, in the Wyre Forest PCG. The district has 6 wards with fewer than 5 people per hectare. These surround the more densely populated Kidderminster and Stourport-on-Severn. Seven wards have population densities of 20 or more, and Greenhill has a population density of 50, four highest in the county. The Jarman score is -8.6 for Wyre Forest but within the district there are wide variations: Oldington & Foley Park (+25.37) is the fourth more deprived ward in Worcestershire, yet Rock & Ribbesford (-8.15) is the seventh least deprived. Other wards with positive scores are Broadwaters (+13.19), Greenhill (+9.98), Sutton Park (+6.08) and Mitton (+0.91). Oldington & Foley Park, Broadwaters and Sutton Park also have above average proportions of lone parent households.
